Rice Community Involvement Center - Extended Service Programs

All of the Community Involvement Center's extended service experiences combine the crucial elements of service, education, and reflection in a group experience, with the exception of the Loewenstern Fellowships, which is a solo experience. University of Tokyo Research Internship Program

Location: Tokyo | No Citizenship Requirement

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program is an intensive summer research experience program, targeted at undergraduates who express a keen interest in pursuing a MD or Ph.D degree in the future. During the program, the participants will receive intensive instructions and lectures from the School's renowned faculty members belonging to six departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth & planetary science, biophysics & biochemistry, and biological sciences. The program is open to students who are currently enrolled in junior or senior year in an accredited college or university outside of Japan, majoring in natural sciences or related field.

Tokyo Institute of Technology Young Scientist Exchange Program

Location: Tokyo | Requirements: Attend a University that has entered into a Student Exchange Agreement

The Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) offers the YSEP (Young Scientist Exchange Program), which gives you the unique opportunity to experience a research project under direct guidance of an experienced professor as well as related subjects and Japanese language. The program is conducted in English and lasts for one year from August to the following September. To be eligible you must be fluent in English and have completed three years of undergraduate study and have not yet finished your master's degree. You must also be a student of a university with which Tokyo Tech has concluded Student Exchange Agreement. If the agreement has been concluded between departments, only the students in the departments can apply.

Japan Program at Chiba University(J-PAC)

Location: Chiba | Requirements: Attend a university that is an Exchange Partner of Chiba

In October 1996, Chiba University inaugurated its Japan Program At Chiba (J-PAC) under which students of Chiba University exchange partners have the opportunity to study in Japan for six to twelve months from October each year. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in an institution of higher education that has concluded an inter-university student exchange agreement with Chiba University. The agreement should allow credit transfer and waiver of tuition and fees for application and registration. Students accepted into the program must agree to return to their home institution upon completion of the exchange program. J-PAC has three academic programs including a 1) Japanese studies program, 2) Undergraduate exchange program, and 3) Graduate exchange program. The aim of Program 1 and Program 2 is to offer those undergraduate students who have already learned Japanese the opportunity to study more about Japan. Japan America Student Conference

Each summer, nearly 80 students from universities across Japan and the United States convene to discuss some of the hottest topics facing the two nations. The program alternates host countries each year giving students the rare opportunity to see places, whether at home or abroad, and learn about their culture through the eyes of others. From politics to pop culture and everything in between, JASC offers motivated university students of all levels an outlet for ambition, intellect, and cultural stimulation. Not only do conference participants learn about one of the world’s most strategic bilateral alliances, they also have the opportunity to directly help reinforce the bonds between countries by sharing knowledge and experiences while making memories and friendships with other future leaders. Americans will be selected from all fields of study and can range from 1st year college students to Ph.D. candidates. Students need not be Asian studies majors or minors, or have a proficiency in Japanese.

Global E3: The Global Engineering Education Exchange Program in Japan

Recognizing a growing demand for internationally-experienced engineering graduates, a group of leading universities around the world established the Global E3 in 1995. Global E3 allows engineering students at member universities to enjoy a fulfilling study abroad experience. Engineering students at participating universities are encouraged to apply to study at any eligible overseas partner university. The AIEJ Scholarship is available for students studying at Tohoku University through the Global E3 program. Applications are automatically sent to all students who apply through Global E3 to study in Japan.

Georgia Tech Languages for Business & Technology - Japan

Location: Ritsumeikan University | Requirements: No Citizenship Requirement

The intensive summer programs in Languages for Business and Technology (LBAT) consist of six to eight weeks of study abroad in which classroom lessons in business, culture, and technology are combined with field work, cultural events, excursions, and visits to area businesses-all conducted in the target language. In the LBAT-Japan program you will earn 9 semester hours (3 classes in Business Japanese, Technical Japanese, and Japan Today) while studying at the Ritsumeikan University. Non-GA Tech students are eligble to apply as a transient student.

Bridging Scholarship for Study in Japan

The Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Funding from private foundations and major U.S. corporations, through donations to the nonprofit US-Japan Bridging Foundation, makes it possible to award about 100 scholarships each year to assist students with the travel and living expenses they will incur while studying abroad in Japan for a semester or an academic year. Applications are accepted twice a year for Bridging Scholarships.

Japanese Government Monbukagakusho Scholarships

Each year, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (Monbukagakusho) offers scholarships to international students, providing hundreds with the opportunity to live and study in Japan.To date, some 65,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954. There are five scholarship categories that are offered to United States citizens. These include Japanese Studies Scholarships, Research Student Scholarships, Teacher-Training Scholarships, Vocational Scholarships, and Undergraduate Student Scholarships. Applications are due six months to one year prior to departure so be sure you check on these scholarships early. You must apply through your nearest Japanese consulate or embassy. JASSO Scholarships for Study in Japan

Global Edge International Internship Directory

Whitaker Undergraduate Scholarship Program for Biomedical Engineers

The Whitaker Undergraduate Scholarship Program is designed for second, third and fourth year biomedical engineering students from U.S. institutions to study biomedical engineering abroad for one semester or an academic year.

American Chemical Society IRES Program

The ACS International Research Experience for Undergraduates (IREU) program gives undergraduate chemical science students an opportunity to pursue research at universities in Italy, Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Participating institutions are recognized as top producers of scientific knowledge. Program Sponsors. IREU students spend 10 weeks working on frontier chemistry research projects under the guidance of faculty members and graduate student mentors to sharpen scientific skills, develop collaborations with scientists abroad, and experience the life and culture of a foreign country. Up to $5,800 is awarded for travel, living expenses, insurance, pre-departure orientation, language, instruction, and presenting research at an ACS national meeting.

DAAD Research Internships in Science & Engineering (RISE)

RISE is a summer internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 2 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. The working language will be English. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the DAAD to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance.

DAAD - UAS7 Study & Internship in Germany

Optics in the City of Light International Research Experience for Undergraduates

ITRI International Internship Program

Location: Taiwan | Requirements: UG/Grad. | Open to All Except Taiwanese Citizens

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is a national research organization that serves to strengthen the technological competitiveness of Taiwan. Since our inception, ITRI has three mission statements: first, to expedite the development of new industrial technology; two, to aid in the process of upgrading industrial technology techniques; and three, to establish future industrial technology. Each summer ITRI hosts about 30 international students for 10-week internships. ITRI also offers a limited number of longer internships of 4-6 months during Spring and Fall. This program is open to graduate and undergraduate students currently enrolled at accredited 4-year colleges and universities. Jobs are typically posted in Janauary with applications closing in late February or early March.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Scholarships are available for semester, summer, and academic year programs.

NSEP Boren Scholarship

Location: Worldwide - Excluding Western Europe, Canada, Australia, & New Zealand | Requirements: U.S. Citizen or Perm. Resident

Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholarships are funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants should identify how their study abroad program, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, broadly defined. NSEP draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.

Critical Language Scholarship Program

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded group-based intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks for U.S. citizen undergraduate, Master’s and Ph.D. students.The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Students of diverse disciplines and majors are encouraged to apply. Participants are expected to continue their language study beyond the scholarship period, and later apply their critical language skills in their future professional careers. Foundation for Global Scholars Scholarships

Over 200 scholarships between $500 and $2,500 will be awarded this calendar year for U.S. and Canadian citizens to study internationally. Award amounts will vary with the average award being approximately $1,000. At the time of applying for any of the Foundation scholarships, you must be enrolled in a North American college or university where transfer credit from an academic program abroad will be applied to your degree being earned. (The exception to this requirement is the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad Internship Scholarship. There are no other exceptions.)

Global Studies Grant for Student Travel and Study Abroad

Location: Asia/Pacific Region | Requirements: U.S. or Canadian Citizen

Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. As with our faculty grants, GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return – ideally, with multiple audiences and varied media. We are particularly interested in funding the study of strategically significant countries and languages.

Fund for Education Abroad Scholarship

The FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. FEA will accept applications starting in early September for study abroad in the 2012-2013 academic year. Students planning to go abroad for the entire academic year, in Fall 2012, Spring 2013, or Summer 2013 are encouraged to apply. Awards will be made in early 2012.

StudyAbroad.com Golden Key Study Abroad Scholarship

This scholarship assists members who participate in a study abroad program. At least ten $1,000 (USD) awards will be presented each year (at least three for the 15 October deadline and at least seven for the 1 April deadline). Those eligible are undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate members who are currently enrolled in a study abroad program or will be enrolled the academic year immediately following the granting of the award. The study abroad program cannot have been completed prior to the application deadline date.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants

Eurasian Regional Language Program
