Statement of Interest in NanoJapan Program
All essays should be composed first in Microsoft Word or another word processing software and should be single-spaced. Applicants should save a copy of their essays and have them proofread by a trusted advisor for content, grammar, and spelling. Your final essays can then simply be copied and pasted into the text boxes below. |
Why Japan?
In one to two paragraphs, please describe why you have chosen to apply
to a program in Japan? What specifically interests you about living and
working in Japan? Do you have any prior exposure to Japanese language,
culture, society, etc. and, if so, please describe how these
experiences relate to your interest in the NanoJapan program. Why do
you think it is important for students studying science and engineering
to have experience working in an international, cross-cultural setting?

Broader Impact: NanoJapan Follow-on Project
As a program sponsored by the National Science Foundation, NanoJapan seeks to have a broad and long-lasting impact. We particularly seek to encourage diversity, broaden opportunities, and enable the participation of all citizens - women and men, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities- in science and research with the ultimate goal of contributing to the development of a generation of globally-competent engineering and science workforce. The program also seeks to encourage students to pursue further study and research in a nanotechnology-related field at the graduate level.
To broaden the reach of the NanoJapan Program participants
will be required to carry out a follow-on
project that broadly promotes the NanoJapan program to students at your
home university, in your academic field, or in your local community.
Projects should seek to encourage students to pursue international study
and research opportunities such as NanoJapan and, more broadly, to pursue study and
research in the field of nanotechnology at the undergraduate or
graduate level. Projects may be single or multi-part and can build upon organizations, campus outreach, or other programs that you are already involved in. We encourage participants to be creative, innovative, and have fun with the development and implementation of their NanoJapan Follow-on Project Proposal.
In no more than one page, describe your proposed Follow-on Project being sure to address the following:
- Clearly Identify your Target Audience
- Clearly Identify an Unmet Need Among this Audience that Your Project Will Address
- Clearly Identify your Project Goals
- Clearly Identify the Outreach Method to be Used
- Clearly Identify a Time-frame for the Implementation of your Project
- Clearly Identify the Anticipated Impact of your Project

Recommendation Letters
Indicate below the name and email address of the two individuals you plan to ask to provide your required Letters of Recommendation. Contact them prior to submitting your online application to be sure you have their correct email address and that they are willing to submit a recommendation letter on your behalf. Once you submit your online application, the NanoJapan program will send an email with further instructions on the recommendation letter preparation and submission process to these individuals.
One letter MUST be from a professor, advisor, or research mentor at your current university or college. If you have previously conducted academic research, either in high-school or college, one letter MUST be from a research advisor or mentor from your current or previous research lab. The second letter could also be from someone at your current university or it could be from a high-school teacher or counselor, advisor, mentor, employer, volunteer coordinator, or other individual who knows you in an academic, research, professional, or volunteer capacity and who can speak to your interest in Japan and/or nanotechnology research. Recommendation letters cannot be submitted by family or friends.
It is your responsibility as an applicant to ensure that all recommendation letters are submitted by the deadline listed on our Application and Timeline page. If one of the individuals you list in your application is unable or unwilling to submit a recommendation letter on your behalf or if the email address you listed is incorrect contact the NanoJapan program as soon as possible by email at nanojapan@rice.edu.
